The number of students graduating on time (after four years of high school), as a percentage of their cohort. The cohort is the class of ninth-graders beginning high school together.
High school graduation is the culmination of a successful K-12 education and the gateway to college or employment. Students who do not graduate face the prospect of unemployment or low-paying jobs.
The region's 87% graduation rate for the class of 2018 was even with the state rate (excluding NYC). The graduation rate was highest in Greene and Putman County (91%) followed by Orange (88%) and Dutchess (86%). Graduation rates have increased 8 percentage points in the region, up from 79% in the class of 2009.
Graduation rates were lowest in Poughkeepsie (55%) in Dutchess, Liberty Central Village (69%) in Sullivan, and Livingston Manor Central Village (71%) in Sullivan County. The highest rates (95% or higher) were Mahopac Central in Putnam, Rhinebeck Central in Dutchess, Warwick Valley in Orange, and Hunter-Tannerville in Greene County (all at 95%); New Paltz (96%) in Ulster; Cornwall in Orange (98%) and Haldane (99%) in Putnam.
Data for earlier years were not comparable because cohorts were not tracked in the same way. These figures reflect graduates in August, which includes students who made up courses during summer and graduated. The state also presents the figure for graduates in June.
