What does this measure?

The net growth or decline in jobs by sector, shown as a percentage gain or loss.

Why is this important?

Job growth by sector is a key indicator of economic vitality and reveals how the structure of industry and the composition of employment in the region are changing.

How is the region performing?

Total jobs in the region increased by 10% from 2010 to 2024, less than the national increase of 21% but greater than the statewide (excluding NYC) increase of 7%. The largest rate increases from 2010 to 2024 were in Construction (47%) and Educational Services (41%). In contrast, the Government and the Information sectors experienced decreases of 18% and 12%, respectively.

At the county level, Sullivan and Orange had the largest increases in total jobs from 2010 to 2024 (both at 21%), while Greene experienced no increase in total job growth (-1%) from 2010 to 2024.

Data is from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Employment is reported by place of work, not place of residence. This dataset does not include sole proprietors/self-employed individuals, including farmers.
