What does this measure?

The percent of students tested who scored at level 3 or above--meeting or exceeding the state standard--on the New York State Grade 4 Math exam, broken down by student subgroup. The test is scored by placing a student's performance in one of four levels.

Why is this important?

Early development of mathematics concepts provides the basis for mastery of problem solving and computation skills.

How is the region performing?

In 2022, 22% of low-income students in the region passed the exam, compared to 34% of all fourth-graders. This compares to passing rates of 24% for low-income and 42% of all students statewide (excluding NYC).

Sullivan and Ulster counties had the lowest proficiency rates among economically disadvantaged students at 17% and Greene had the highest (31%). Poughkeepsie and Fallsburg had the lowest proportion of economically disadvantaged students passing 4th grade math both at 7% followed by Monticello at 11%. Putnam Valley and New Lebanon had the highest passing rates at 72% and 67% respectively.

Just 8% of both English Language Learners and students with disabilities in the region passed the exam.

In the region, 20% of students in 3rd through 8th graders opted not to take the math exam. Rates varied across counties, from 8% in Sullivan, 12% in Columbia and 13% in Greene to 19% in Dutchess and 22%-28% in the remaining counties.

Notes about the data

Students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch are considered low-income. Test results for small groups of students were not disclosed to protect student privacy. Data for this indicator are expected to be released in the third quarter.
